How many dates should you wait before having sex with someone?

Hint: Experts says it's not three dates. But I know for a fact that we've all heard that one before; 'WHATEVER you do, don't sleep with him before date three or he'll never take you seriously'. Where did it even come from - this 'three-date' rule?

Maybe someone just had sex after three dates and it all worked out so she just went 'yep, this is how long it should be'. And then the wisdom got passed along and now it's a thing. But the point is, a new survey has arrived and it's shown that the three-date rule is officially an urban myth and the official average amount of time that's acceptable to wait in this day and age is nine dates.

Yes you read that right. Nine dates.

The study (by Groupon) happened in the US, where 2000 men and women were polled about how long they should abstain from sex in order to enter a healthy relationship with that person. Here's a couple of little highlights from all the saucy stats they found...

- The average person wanted to wait until date nine before heading to the bedroom

- Men were NINE times more likely to be cool with having sex on the first date (any surprise there?)

- Just 30% of men and 8% of women thought it was a good idea to have sex during the first three dates
- Men think sex is on the cards from date five and onwards

So, there you have it - wait somewhere in the vicinity of 5-9 dates and the theory is that you'll find yourself a more successful relationship.

But this is the UK. Also, it's 2017 - the year of Beyonce, feminism and cool 'female boss' slogan tees and I personally say bollocks to waiting nine dates, just because that's what a few people say you should do.

Do you remember that movie 'Friends with Benefits', where Mila Kunis decides she wants to wait five dates before having sex with the sexy doctor she met in the park? Well, she did it all by the book and the morning after date five, he made a run for it. He stuck around for the challenge then did one.

I'm not saying all men will do that, but the point here is; if a man is going to screw you around, then it doesn't really matter how long you wait - they'll still find a way to do it. Sure, that'll weed some of the bad eggs out, but keeping them waiting isn't necessarily the recipe for success, either. If, after the second or third date you really feel like you want to go home with sexy Pete from Clapham, then why shouldn't you? That's the great thing about being an adult - you can make your own choices.

Do what feels right for you and when it feels right and who knows - you might find a keeper.
